Designing a Beneficiary

Our Legacy Giving Program helps you learn how to take care of yourself, your family, and your community by naming the Park County Community Foundation as the charitable beneficiary of specified assets. Anyone can leave a legacy and at any level.

Such assets can include:

  • Real estate – A Montana Transfer on Death (TOD) deed lets you name beneficiaries to receive real estate automatically upon your death, avoiding probate, but the owner keeps full control while alive. This requires notarization and recording with the County Clerk before death for validity.

  • Life Insurance Policies – An individual and/or an organization may be designated as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

  • IRAs and other retirement accounts – With the help of your bank, you may designate the beneficiary of your retirement accounts, which can include an individual and/or an organization.

  • Donor-Advised Funds (allowable for some DAFs, but not all)

  • Bank Accounts – You can arrange to have the assets in various bank accounts transferred directly to an individual/organization through a payable-on-death or POD designation that you arrange on a form with your banker.

  • Stock and mutual fund shares – With the help of your broker, you can designate an individual and/or organization as the beneficiary to your stocks or mutual fund shares through a transfer-on-death or TOD designation.

  • Vehicle or boat – a Transfer on Death Deed or TODD can be used to leave a vehicle or boat to someone/an organization after passing, while keeping the property out of probate.

Step 1: Make a list of the assets that you have and choose the ones that you would like to leave for a charitable cause.

Step 2: Fill out a Change of Beneficiary or TOD or POD form, naming Park County Community Foundation Federal Tax ID:  #20-5581763 as the beneficiary or recipient.

Step 3: You retain control of these assets during your lifetime and then the assets transfer upon your passing.

We can assist by setting up a fund to support a particular organization or cause. The Park County Community Foundation receives your donation, handles tax receipts, and processes payments to disburse the funds back into the community.
