About Us

What is the Park County Community Foundation?

The Community Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity that promotes and facilitates charitable giving. The Foundation helps individuals, families and businesses accomplish their charitable goals and helps nonprofits as a source of grants and as a vehicle for building capacity for their future.

Is the Community Foundation a charity?

Yes. The Park County Community Foundation is a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is incorporated under the laws of Montana. All contributions to the Foundation – including those designated for Fiscal Sponsor entities – qualify for the maximum available tax deduction allowed by federal tax laws for charitable contributions.

Who governs the Community Foundation?

The Foundation’s governing Board of Directors comprises community-minded, dedicated citizens who live in Park County, Montana. They are a diverse group of people who have different areas of expertise and community knowledge. As individuals, the directors accept their fiduciary responsibilities to the Foundation concerning the administration, investment, monitoring and distribution of the charitable assets maintained by the Foundation.

What is the difference between the Park County Community Foundation and the United Way?

The United Way primarily provides funds for the current needs of health and human service organizations. There is no United Way organization in Park County but the Greater Gallatin United Way provides assistance to a small number of agencies here, primarily after-school child care and as part of multi-county programs. In contrast, the Park County Community Foundation carries out its leadership role as a local public charity closely connected to the community through its volunteer board and volunteers. Over the past decade, more than 75 local nonprofit groups, schools and civic entities have received Community Foundation grants to further their worthwhile efforts. Our leadership role extends to encouraging local philanthropy and guiding resources to those areas most in need and deserving of help.  Our focus is entirely on Park County and our goal is clear: to improve the quality of life for all county residents.

Why should I give to the Community Foundation instead of, or in addition to, giving directly to my favorite charity?

As a general rule, there is no benefit to passing a single annual campaign gift through the Foundation. Gifts that are needed currently by a nonprofit organization should be made directly to the organization. If, however, you desire to seed an endowment fund for an organization, or desire to create or build a long-term charitable fund to benefit a variety of nonprofit organizations, the Foundation is an excellent vehicle for accomplishing that purpose.
